Speaker: Sue Crawford, PhD, Professor of Political Science and International Relations, Creighton University

Please join us this month to hear Dr. Sue Crawford discuss her experiences as a female candidate and elected official in the Nebraska Unicameral. She was first elected in 2012 and re-elected in 2016 and served as a Nebraska state senator from 2013 to 2020. She is also a faculty member at Creighton University and has taught Gender and Politics there. Her comments will highlight ways that woman can encourage and support women candidates and elected officials.

Ashlei Spivey is a program officer for the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation, where she manages a broad grant portfolio that addresses systemic inequities that impact entrepreneurial success in the Heartland, as well as a peer-learning community designed to encourage collaborative, regional entrepreneurship support and strategy development. Ashlei is a bold leader that actively works to create just and equitable communities. In her work as a community organizer, philanthropist, and activist, she champions racial and gender justice to create catalytic and sustainable system change. Ashlei is a Omaha native and is the founder of I Be Black Girl (IBBG). IBBG is a collective that creates space for Black identifying women, femmes and girls to grow, connect, give and take action.

  3. A Town Hall discussion for members to share their ideas and provide input for this coming year.

Program: AAUW Work Smart Program

AAUW Work Smart is designed to help you negotiate for a new job, raise, or promotion. In every two-hour workshop you’ll gain confidence in your negotiation style through facilitated discussion and role-play and learn:

  • How to identify and articulate your personal value
  • How to develop an arsenal of persuasive responses and other negotiation strategies, including how to get a raise or promotion
  • How to conduct objective market research to benchmark a target salary and benefits
  • About the wage gap, including its long-term consequences

Program: Appointed or Elected? The Constitutionality of Appointing Nebraska’s County Election Commissioners
Speaker: Senator Matt Hansen

Nebraska statutes permit the governor or county boards to appoint county election commissioners for Douglas, Lancaster, and Sarpy Counties. Many believe that all county election commissioners, including those in the state’s most populous counties, be accountable to the voters and be elected in accordance with the Nebraska Constitution.

Senator Hansen has recently introduced LB 1022, requiring election of election commissioners in all Nebraska counties to ensure accountability.

The program for the February 8th general meeting will be a panel of women who are active in local philanthropic organizations.

There will also be a book sale table so bring up to 4 books that you have already enjoyed.

Location: Buffett Cancer Center at UNMC

If you haven’t seen it yet, you have probably heard how lovely the new Buffett Cancer Center at UNMC is. We hope to schedule a tour for January 11th. The Tour would start at 1:00 and last 1 hour. The tour is free and there is an adjacent covered parking lot.

The November 9th General Meeting of the Omaha Branch of AAUW will be a field trip to the new Nebraska History Museum in Lincoln to view the special exhibit “Votes For Women: Nebraska’s Suffrage Story”. Click here to read more about this exhibit.

We have complimentary school bus transportation. We will leave from our regular parking spots at the College of Saint Mary at 12:00pm.
